¿Why Bridge Project?

Chile is currently the world’s second-largest producer of lithium, positioning itself as a strategic player in the development of critical raw materials for the global energy transition.

In this context, there is a growing need to incorporate Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technologies aimed at enabling new approaches to resource exploration and sustainable management. However, the project’s scope is not limited solely to lithium, but instead proposes an integrated perspective that also considers other valuable elements present in brines and geological fluids.

At the international level, the strategic importance of these resources has been reinforced by the European Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), which sets a target of achieving 10% domestic production within Europe. At the same time, Germany and other European countries show significant potential for the utilization of geothermal brines rich in critical minerals. In particular, three promising geological regions for lithium extraction have been identified in Germany, creating new opportunities for scientific and technological cooperation between both countries.

Scopes

The BRIDGE project is centered on the establishment and consolidation of a long-term scientific collaboration between Germany and Chile, focused on the development of knowledge and technologies for the sustainable extraction of critical raw materials from brines and fluid-hosted reservoirs. In this context, research is conceived not only as a tool for knowledge generation, but also as a platform to strengthen communication, institutional cooperation, and the development of shared scientific infrastructure between both countries.

As part of its implementation strategy, the project includes the organization of annual workshops, seminars, and conferences aimed at disseminating results, strengthening collaborative networks, and promoting technical exchange among researchers, public institutions, and industry stakeholders. In addition, the creation of an industrial advisory board is envisaged to connect the needs and challenges of the productive sector with the research lines developed within BRIDGE.

In this way, the project seeks to become a starting point for future binational initiatives between academia and industry, fostering the development of new applied research projects, technological initiatives, and joint funding opportunities.

Our Objectives

To identify, assess, and compare sustainable extraction techniques for critical raw materials from fluid-hosted reservoirs in Germany and Chile, through the geological characterization of deposits, integrated reservoir modeling, and the validation of direct element extraction technologies, particularly lithium.

Work Plan

The BRIDGE work plan is structured in two major phases. The first corresponds to a three-year initiation phase focused on establishing the scientific collaboration, building international networks, characterizing reservoirs, and developing pilot research activities in Germany and Chile. During this stage, activities will include geological and hydrogeochemical exploration, sampling campaigns, reservoir modeling, evaluation of direct lithium extraction technologies, and scientific and institutional dissemination activities.

Subsequently, the project envisions a two-year consolidation phase aimed at strengthening the institutionalization of BRIDGE as a permanent platform for international cooperation. This stage includes the reinforcement of research infrastructure, the expansion of the network of strategic partners, the development of new funding proposals, and the consolidation of a stable interface between research, industry, and public institutions in both countries.
